Atomic Annie (1953)
The cannon gained worldwide attention on May 25, 1953, when it fired the only nuclear artillery shell ever detonated from a cannon during Operation Upshot-Knothole at the Nevada Test Site. The successful test demonstrated the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon using traditional artillery, marking a significant milestone in military technology.
Transported by specially designed tractor units, the enormous weapon could be moved across roads despite its size. Although several Atomic Annie cannons were deployed by the United States and its allies, they were never used in combat. Advances in missile technology and more compact nuclear weapons eventually made the giant artillery piece obsolete.
This historic film offers a fascinating glimpse into Cold War military innovation and the atomic age, when nations explored new and sometimes extraordinary methods of nuclear deterrence.
