Quebec and the American Revolution

During the American Revolution, Quebec's loyalty to the British Crown was secured by a blend of cultural, religious, and political factors. The predominantly French-speaking and Catholic population of the province ...found it challenging to align with the Protestant and English-speaking American colonies. The Quebec Act of 1774, which restored French civil law and guaranteed religious freedoms, further bound Quebec to British rule.

Diplomatic efforts by the British government emphasized the preservation of Quebec's cultural identity within the empire. Military defense against American invasion attempts also bolstered Quebec's loyalty. Despite overtures from the Continental Congress, including the 1777 Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, Quebec ultimately remained steadfast in its allegiance to the British Crown.
